Turning 25 feels both surreal and grounding. It’s a time when dreams meet reality and plans turn into experiences. While a decade ago, I shared lessons on embracing my passion and taking risks, these five years have deepened those learnings, bringing new perspectives and a keener awareness of what truly matters. Here’s to sharing my journey so far, and the wisdom I’ve gathered on the way.

Five years ago, on my 20th birthday, I wrote a blog titled 20 Life Lessons I Learned in My Twenties,” capturing the excitement and wonder of entering adulthood. Reflecting on my growth since then, I realize how much these past years have added layers of wisdom, humility, and a deepened understanding of life. Turning 25 is both a milestone and a moment to pause, as these years have not only built on those initial lessons but have also shaped my views in profound ways.

Here’s to sharing the journey so far, with new perspectives and some familiar themes that still ring true, as I embrace this new chapter.

1. Your Parents Are Getting Older

In our younger years, we see our parents as the foundation of our world — strong, unwavering, almost invincible. But over time, subtle shifts start to appear. Perhaps it’s noticing a few more grey hairs or seeing them tire more quickly, but those reminders bring home the reality: our parents are ageing. It’s a profound realization that underscores the importance of cherishing the time we have with them.

There’s a kind of wisdom that comes from sitting down with our parents and truly listening. Their stories, their struggles, and their dreams become more vivid when viewed through an adult lens. They once had dreams and fears, just as we do now, and they navigated their own journeys to create a world in which we could thrive. Being present with them, making time for them, and capturing memories feels like one of the most meaningful ways to show gratitude.

As I move forward, I realize that just as they’ve been my support, I can be theirs too. It’s not about repaying a debt but honouring the profound impact they’ve had. I’m learning to be there for them, not only as their child but also as a confidant, a friend, and someone who will support them with the same unwavering dedication they’ve shown me.

2. Learn More, Gain Knowledge

In school and university, knowledge was often tied to assignments and exams. Now, learning feels less like a requirement and more like a gift. Whether it’s a new skill, an interesting course, or a deep dive into a topic I’m passionate about, learning has become an intentional pursuit — a way to expand both my personal and professional horizons.

The tech world constantly evolves, demanding that we stay curious and adaptive. But this applies beyond our careers. Learning about different cultures, philosophies, and perspectives enriches the mind and fosters empathy. It’s this breadth of knowledge that allows us to navigate life with greater understanding, creativity, and resilience.

In these years, I’ve come to understand that the pursuit of knowledge is one of the few investments that always yields returns. Skills may fade, jobs may change, but knowledge remains, shaping how we approach challenges and seek solutions. The journey of learning isn’t about accumulating facts; it’s about developing a mind that’s agile, open, and ready to embrace the world.

3. Family Is Important

In a world that often celebrates individual achievements, it’s easy to focus on self-reliance. But when I look back, the constant in every up and down has been family. They’re there for the quiet victories, the hard-fought battles, and the moments of doubt. They’re a reminder that we’re part of something bigger — a legacy of love, resilience, and shared values.

Family isn’t just a support system; it’s a part of who we are. The habits, traditions, and beliefs passed down shape our worldview, reminding us of the connections that keep us grounded. As I navigate adulthood, I’m learning to cherish these bonds, to invest in them, and to give back with the same unwavering commitment they’ve shown me.

The meaning of family also evolves. It’s no longer just about blood ties but also about the friendships and relationships that have become my chosen family. This support system, forged through shared experiences and mutual respect, enriches life in ways that accomplishments alone never could. Family, in all its forms, is a reminder that we’re never alone in our journey.

4. Not All Failed Dates Are Failures

In a world that celebrates relationships and romantic milestones, it’s easy to view every unsuccessful date or relationship as a failure. But looking back, I’ve learned that each connection — no matter how fleeting — offers its own lessons. Relationships, even those that don’t last, reveal something about ourselves, our values, and what we truly seek in a partner.

Through these experiences, I’ve come to value compatibility over perfection. Relationships aren’t about finding someone who checks every box but rather finding someone who understands and complements who we are. Learning this has been a humbling journey, one that’s taught me the importance of patience, authenticity, and self-respect.

Not every connection leads to a lasting bond, but each encounter leaves us with insights and growth. It’s a reminder that relationships aren’t about filling a gap but enhancing our lives. When we let go of the pressure to find “the one” and instead embrace the experience of getting to know others, dating becomes less about success or failure and more about self-discovery.

5. Don’t Take Your Health for Granted

Health is often sidelined in our twenties, a time when we feel almost invincible. I’ve learned, though, that physical and mental well-being should never be an afterthought. Ignoring it now means facing the consequences later, and taking small steps today can save us from bigger challenges down the road.

Whether it’s prioritizing regular exercise, eating balanced meals, or setting aside time to rest, health should be a non-negotiable part of life. Mental health, too, requires care. Managing stress, building resilience, and seeking support when needed are essential practices. I’ve realized that my health isn’t just the foundation for a fulfilling career but also for a joyful life.

The reality is, that our bodies and minds are our greatest assets. Taking care of them isn’t about rigid routines or strict diets; it’s about creating a sustainable lifestyle that keeps us at our best. By valuing health today, we set ourselves up for a future where we can continue to pursue our passions without limitation.

Your Twenties Don’t Matter (As Much As You Think)

There’s immense pressure to make our twenties a highlight reel — one filled with career milestones, relationships, and accomplishments. Society often frames these years as the defining decade, the time to set ourselves up for a successful future. But, as I’ve discovered, our twenties don’t dictate our entire lives.

Life doesn’t follow a rigid timeline, and success isn’t a one-size-fits-all journey. Some people achieve great things in their twenties, while others find their stride later on. The beauty of life is that it’s not a race but a marathon, one where each chapter unfolds at its own pace. Rushing through milestones doesn’t necessarily lead to fulfilment; it’s the journey, with all its twists and turns, that shapes us.

I’m learning to let go of expectations, to embrace the unknown, and to view my twenties as a time for exploration rather than definitive achievement. We may feel pressured to meet certain milestones, but true success lies in living authentically, in choosing paths that align with who we are, not what society expects.

Final Reflections

At 25, I’m standing at the edge of the past and the future. I carry with me lessons learned, dreams still forming, and a sense of purpose that has grown richer with time. Life, with its unpredictable paths, has taught me to find value in each experience, whether it’s a lesson in resilience, a deepened relationship, or simply a moment of joy.

These years have shaped who I am, but they’re only the beginning. I’m learning to be more present, to appreciate the moments in between, and to remember that life isn’t about ticking boxes but about experiencing each season fully. If my twenties have shown me anything, it’s that life is about progress, not perfection.

Here’s to the years ahead, to the lessons yet to be learned, and to living with curiosity, compassion, and an open heart.

All the Best :)
